Cumberland County, NC — October 6, 2025, one person was killed and one was injured following an 18-wheeler accident around 6:30 a.m. on I-95.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that the incident happened near the Highway 23 interchange east of Fayetteville.

It appears that a dump truck was on the shoulder along northbound lanes of the interstate. Reports say a mechanic was working on the truck at the time when a passing 18-wheeler crashed into the dump truck. The 18-wheeler hit the mechanic, killing them.
The driver of the dump truck was inside the truck at the time and sustained injuries in the crash. The 18-wheeler driver apparently was not hurt. At this time, additional details are unavailable.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
These reports aren’t clear on some rather important details. Did the 18-wheeler drive onto the shoulder, or was the dump truck sticking into the lane of travel? Was the stopped truck well-lit or clearly marked and easily avoidable?
On top of that, have authorities worked to preserve time-sensitive electronic data? Cellphone records, Engine Control Module data from the trucks, cameras that may have been onboard the trucks, etc. This information is often overwritten or deleted if not collected promptly, so it would be a serious issue if authorities weren’t looking into that information.
Whatever happened here, the priority needs to be gathering and preserving evidence. Focusing on telling the whole story is the best way to ensure those affected by the crash get the resolution they deserve.
