Freestone County, TX — August 5, 2024, Aldo Perez was injured following a single-car accident at approximately 12:00 midnight along Interstate Highway 45.
According to authorities, 23-year-old Aldo Gomez Perez was traveling in a northwest bound Toyota Corolla on Interstate Highway 45 in the vicinity southwest of the F.M. 489 intersection when the accident took place.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Corolla failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It reportedly veered left, partially leaving the roadway before overcorrecting to the right. It then traveled over both northwest bound lanes of the interstate before leaving the road completely, coming to a stop after colliding with a tree.
Perez reportedly suffered serious injuries due to the wreck and was transported to an area medical facility by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle veers off an interstate and crashes into a tree, particularly around midnight, it’s easy to presume the driver simply drifted out of their lane. But in my experience, crashes like this one on I-45 near the F.M. 489 intersection in Freestone County often involve more than meets the eye. To determine whether this crash could have been prevented and what might have caused it, there are three essential questions that should be asked.
First, did the authorities conduct a thorough investigation of the scene and surrounding roadway conditions? At midnight, visibility is naturally reduced, and even small factors—like inadequate signage, sudden curves, or poorly marked lane edges—can cause a vehicle to drift unintentionally. Investigators should examine whether the road design or surface conditions may have contributed to the vehicle’s initial departure from its lane. Without that level of analysis, critical details that shaped the outcome of this crash may be missed.
Second, has anyone looked into whether a mechanical failure contributed to the driver’s loss of control? Sudden veering and overcorrection could be signs of a failure in the steering, braking, or suspension systems—or even a tire blowout. These types of issues aren’t always visible at the crash site and typically require a detailed forensic inspection of the vehicle. That level of analysis is only possible if the car is preserved in its post-accident condition before any repairs or disposal.
Lastly, has all electronic data from the Toyota Corolla been retrieved? Most modern vehicles are equipped with event data recorders that can provide crucial pre-crash information such as speed, steering angle, throttle input, and brake application. This data could help confirm whether the vehicle responded properly to driver input or if something malfunctioned. Supplementary information, such as GPS logs or nearby surveillance footage, might also offer insight into what occurred just before the crash. As always, it’s important to act quickly to preserve this kind of evidence.
When serious injuries are involved and the cause of the crash remains unclear, we can’t rely on assumptions. Asking these questions is the least that can be done to ensure that those affected by this crash get the clarity and closure they deserve.
