Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

It’s easy to chalk up a fatal crash like this one to a simple loss of control. But when a Jeep strikes a tree and overturns on a rural road, and no one else is around to see it happen, the real cause can be harder to pinpoint—unless someone asks the right questions from the start.

1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
For a vehicle to hit a tree and flip, especially on a secondary county road, there must have been significant force involved. Did investigators take the time to map tire tracks or reconstruct the Jeep’s path leading up to the crash? Was there evidence the driver tried to correct or avoid something in the roadway? The answer could be buried in the ground—skid marks, gouge patterns, or debris fields—but those clues are only useful if they’re documented before they disappear.

2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
Jeep Wranglers have a high center of gravity and are known for being more prone to rollovers, especially if a steering or suspension failure occurs. Did something snap or come loose at highway speed? Did the electronic stability control fail to activate? A proper mechanical inspection might reveal whether a blown tire or broken suspension piece contributed—yet many single-car accidents get towed away and forgotten before those questions are ever asked.

3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
The Jeep’s black box may hold the only objective account of what happened: how fast the vehicle was going, whether the brakes were applied, the angle of the steering, and if any stability controls were triggered. That data could show whether Reyes lost control gradually or if something more abrupt caused the crash. GPS or phone activity might also help clarify whether distraction or something more sudden occurred.

When a young person dies in a single-vehicle wreck, it’s not just a matter of speed or control. It’s about whether every possible factor—including mechanical, environmental, and digital—was taken seriously. Too often, those details fade before they’re ever examined.

Takeaways:

  • Scene reconstruction is vital in single-vehicle crashes to reveal possible evasive actions or sudden events.
  • Wranglers have rollover risks that require checking for suspension or steering failure.
  • Black box and phone data may offer the only clues to what led the vehicle off the road.
