While people might think a drunk driving accident would be open-and-shut, they’re often quite complex. If investigations are being thorough, they should also be looking into the possibility a local alcohol provider contributed to this accident. They, too, may need to face consequences along with the alleged drunk driver.
For example, I handled a case not long ago where a drunk driver went into oncoming traffic and hit a family head-on. While authorities were quick to charge the drunk driver, they never bothered looking into where the alcohol came from. Our independent investigations revealed a bar unlawfully over-served the driver, meaning that bar could face criminal investigations, fines, and be held liable for the resulting injuries. Had it been up to authorities alone, that alcohol provider likely would have flown under the radar.
So while it’s not clear what all led to this crash, it’s important investigations go beyond the accident itself. It’s possible this all was the result of just one reckless individual who decided to get behind the wheel drunk. But at the very least, if there’s a possibility an accomplice contributed to the accident, that’s a possibility worth considering.
