A preliminary accident report indicates that a 2007 Ford Mustang crashed into the back of a 2023 Jeep Wrangler south of Houston Avenue, knocking the SUV into a light pole.

A 16-year-old girl in the Mustang and a 25-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Jeep were seriously injured in the crash, according to the report.
The Mustang driver and three passengers suffered minor injuries, the report states. The Jeep driver and three other passengers were not injured.
The Mustang driver, whom the report indicates had been drinking before the crash, was cited for intoxication assault.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a suspected drunk driving crash sends multiple people to the hospital, including a teenager, it’s only natural to ask, how did things get to that point? In situations like this, the focus is often on the immediate consequences. But it’s just as important to look upstream and ask where the alcohol came from in the first place.
According to reports, the driver of the Mustang had been drinking before rear-ending another vehicle and causing serious injuries. That raises serious questions about whether the drinking happened at a private gathering, or if someone at a licensed establishment continued serving a customer who was already obviously intoxicated.
Under Texas dram shop laws, alcohol providers are legally prohibited from serving people who show clear signs of intoxication. If they break that rule and someone they overserve ends up hurting others, the law allows them to be held accountable. That accountability isn’t just about pointing fingers. It’s about preventing more crashes like this from happening.
At 2:20 in the morning, it’s worth asking if the driver had recently left a bar or restaurant. And if so, did that business follow the law, or did they look the other way? More often than not, that part of the investigation is never fully explored.
From where I sit, identifying the source of alcohol is a critical step in any drunk driving investigation. Not only does it help those injured get the full picture, it also helps make sure that any business that contributed to the crash doesn’t have the chance to do it again.
