With any crash allegedly involving alcohol, it’s important to know if authorities are being too narrow in the scope of their investigations. Obviously, if someone is drunk driving, and it causes an accident, that warrants attention. But there’s often an accomplice who also may need to face consequences: an alcohol provider.

Simply put, alcohol providers, such as bars and liquor stores, can face consequences if the over-serve someone who is obviously intoxicated. If they do so, they can potentially face criminal investigations, fines, or possibly liability for injuries resulting from the intoxication. This provides potential avenues to help victims, to see alcohol providers held accountable, and to help ensure those alcohol providers clean up their act before more people get hurt.

Unfortunately, having handled hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers involved in serious accidents, I’ve seen how this is not often a priority for the police. If they have a drunk driver to charge, that’s often where the investigations stop. Maybe authorities here have been more thorough and are ensuring this accident gets the attention it needs. If there was more to this story, though, it wouldn’t be that unusual.
