Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
I've handled hundreds of accident cases involving alleged intoxicated drivers, and every family I ever worked with had one priority: seeing accountability for the wrongs done to them. What usually surprised them, though, was learning that might include a negligent alcohol provider. Let me explain.
Texas and South Carolina have similar laws regarding alcohol providers, such as bars, liquor stores, or even gas stations, serving people who are already intoxicated. It can expose those providers to consequences, including being responsible when that person's intoxication gets people killed. So not only might accountability mean seeing a reckless driver held accountable, it could also mean holding a local establishment responsible before their actions cause harm to other families.
That's why when I read about this accident, I have to wonder if the investigations are including this possibility. At the end of the day, there's a family out there that deserves to know those who wronged them will face appropriate consequences. That might require investigations that go beyond the crash scene itself.
