Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When emergency vehicles are involved in a crash, especially while actively transporting a patient, it raises immediate concerns about how the collision occurred and whether it could have been avoided. These moments demand a closer look—not just at what happened, but at how thoroughly the facts are being gathered.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
Details about the investigation haven’t been made public yet, but they matter here. When an ambulance is struck while moving through an intersection, investigators need to analyze more than just who had the green light. They should be reviewing the speeds involved, timing of traffic signals, and whether sirens or lights were in use and visible. These questions require a careful and skilled review, especially since intersection crashes can be complex and fast-moving. If that kind of work isn’t being done, important facts may be missed.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
If either vehicle didn’t respond the way it should have—whether due to faulty brakes, delayed acceleration, or electrical malfunction—those issues deserve attention. Crashes involving emergency vehicles often focus on human error, but mechanical issues can play just as large a role. If the ambulance or the Honda wasn’t inspected for defects, there’s still more to learn.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
In a crash like this, digital data could be the most reliable witness. The ambulance and the Honda may have recorded information on speed, braking, and driver inputs in the moments before the impact. That data could clarify whether one of the drivers tried to stop or veer off. Traffic camera footage from the intersection and GPS logs from the ambulance could also help confirm the timeline. Without gathering and reviewing this data, it’s hard to get a full picture.
Emergency crews put themselves at risk to help others. When something goes wrong during a call, the investigation should meet the same standard of urgency and care they provide every day.
Key Takeaways:
- Intersection crashes involving emergency vehicles demand detailed, expert review.
- Mechanical issues should be considered alongside driver behavior.
- Vehicle data and traffic camera footage can be key to understanding how a crash unfolded.
