With a single-vehicle accident like this, it's important to know how investigations are being handled. It would surprise people how often I get calls from people who feel authorities either moved on without getting any clear answers or that authorities were more concerned with placing blame than actually gathering evidence. It's unfortunately common, which is why it can be helpful to ask some key questions f the authorities.
The first question is whether authorities had the time, tools, and training to thoroughly investigate the crash. Were investigators able to examine the scene in detail, looking for signs of tire marks, road hazards, or possible debris? Did they assess environmental factors, such as lighting, weather, or road conditions, that could have contributed to the incident? Without a detailed and resource-supported investigation, critical evidence might be missed.
The second question is whether a vehicle defect might have contributed to the crash. Issues like brake failures, steering malfunctions, or tire blowouts can easily cause a driver to lose control. Additionally, seatbelts and airbags may have defects that can turn a potentially minor accident into a much more serious one. Identifying these problems requires a forensic examination of the vehicle, which may not be something authorities have the resources or expertise to perform on their own.
Lastly, it’s crucial to ask whether all relevant electronic evidence has been preserved. Modern vehicles store valuable data in their Engine Control Modules (ECMs), including details about speed, braking, and steering inputs in the seconds leading up to the crash. GPS logs, or surveillance footage from nearby areas might provide additional insight into what occurred. Even cellphone data—one of the first things we look into in our investigations—can slip through the cracks if authorities aren't thorough. Acting quickly to secure this evidence is essential to avoid losing important details.
Ultimately, authorities may be able to provide clear, satisfactory answers to these questions. That usually happens if investigations were taken seriously and handled by properly equipped officers. However, authorities sometimes fall short, leaving people with doubts and unanswered questions. That's when it might be prudent to have independent investigators look things over to see if authorities missed anything important.
