Uvalde County, TX — September 17, 2024, 80-year-old Berta Ramirez was killed in a car accident on U.S. Highway 83 in Uvalde County.

Investigators say the incident happened just before 8:00 a.m. on US-83 near mile marker 586. Preliminary reports indicate a Dodge Journey SUV was traveling south on the highway when the driver tried to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone. The driver reportedly told investigators he tried to look at the occupants of the car he was passing and the Dodge crossed into the road’s northbound lanes. On looking back at the road, he saw a vehicle heading directly toward him.

The Journey driver swerved onto the northbound shoulder to avoid the oncoming vehicle, but the SUV crashed into a Dodge Caravan that was stopped on the roadside. The impact caused the Caravan to spin backward and then overturn on its passenger side.
