With a single-vehicle wreck like this, one of the most challenging aspects can simply be ensuring it gets the attention it needs. I find that a lot of folks believe authorities always have some crack CSI team looking into car accidents, but that’s rarely the reality. The reality is single-vehicle wrecks unfortunately tend to fall low on the list of things authorities want to spend time and resources on.

The result of that can sometimes be officers overlooking things like mechanical issues, road hazards, poor road design, medical conditions, and defective motor vehicle parts (to name a few examples) and just assuming the victim must have been doing something wrong. That’s obviously possible—in fact, driver error is the most common reason a crash like this happens. But unless all the evidence can speak for itself, trying to draw conclusions is just going to lead to mistakes which easily could have been avoided.
