Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Vehicle fires can be rather complex, as people tend to assume they are always the natural result of a crash. They certainly can be, but it’s important that investigators can either rule out or confirm a possible vehicle defect.

There are times when electrical issues, fuel line problems, or other unknown manufacturing mistakes can spark fires. Even something like a seatbelt locking mechanism, for example, has been recalled in recent years for being a fire hazard. The only way to know for sure is through a careful vehicle inspection. In my experience, that’s not often the sort of thing authorities have the proper tools and training to investigate on their own.
