Houston, TX — August 18, 2024, Cuauhtemoc Lopez died while on a work site at around 5:15 p.m. along Collingsworth Street.
OSHA officials say that the accident happened just west of Collingsworth Street and Eastex Freeway intersection.
According to officials, 52-year-old Cuauhtemoc Lopez was working with another employee feeding wood into a wood chipper. While doing so, OSHA says that Cuauhtemoc Lopez collapsed, possibly due to heat exhaustion. Cuauhtemoc Lopez was then pronounced deceased.
Right now, there are no further details available about the incident.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
One would hope that authorities were able to provide clearer answers to the victim’s loved ones than these initial OSHA statements. However, it would surprise folks how often families were simply left in the dark. Sometimes, authorities just forget and move on. Other times, investigators aren’t given the proper time or resources to do a complete investigation. And other times, supervisors just feel there are “higher priorities,” and they push investigators to work on other projects.
For a family who has lost a loved one, though, there is no higher priority than getting answers. That’s why a lot of families rely on independent investigations who can help fill in the blanks and investigate even uncommon or complex possible factors authorities might overlook. Whether or not those efforts were made here, my hope is that the family got a much better explanation of what happened to their loved one than what these sparse reports offer.
