Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
There’s something that stands out to me here despite how little information about the crash is currently available. This appeared to have been a chaotic accident with multiple people and vehicles involved. Yet somehow, only one person had injuries—serious ones, in fact. Why is that? Was it just bad luck, or could there have been serious problems authorities overlooked?
Here’s why I say this. Something that far too often flies under the radar is vehicle safety features. Authorities rarely examine them after a serious crash, yet they can sometimes be the root cause of someone’s serious injuries. For example, there are times where airbags or seatbelts fail to function as expected during a crash. This can result in someone being seriously injured in a situation where they should have been more or less okay.
That’s not something typical, initial police investigations tend to cover. If authorities didn’t keep the vehicles for further analysis from more experienced specialists who have the right tools and training, they might miss a vehicle defect. Common or not, they happen, and any red flag that one may have occurred is at least worth ruling out. Did that ever happen here, or did authorities move on without ensuring they covered all possibilities?
