Man Killed in Box Truck Accident on CA-46 in Paso Robles, CA
San Luis Obispo County, CA — December 4, 2025, a man was killed as the result of a box truck accident at around 5:30 a.m. along State Highway 46.
Initial statements from the California Highway Patrol say that the accident took place at the intersection of CA-46 and Golden Hill Road.
According to officials, a 63-year-old Paso Robles man was in a Lexus going westbound on the highway. The Lexus stopped at the traffic light, and sometime later, a Freightliner truck going the same direction slammed into the Lexus.
Due to the crash, the Lexus driver was killed. Authorities say they arrested the truck driver for alleged vehicular manslaughter. Right now, the cause of the crash is still under investigations.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
It's obviously concerning to see a commercial truck driver blamed for such a serious accident. However, it's important to know whether or not authorities continued their investigations beyond the crash scene. I've handled hundreds of commercial vehicle accident cases. A lot of the time, there's an accomplice to a crash like this who needs to be called out: the truck driver's employer.
People may be quick to think I'm just looking for someone else to blame. Seeing the cases I've handled throughout my career, though, would change that opinion rather quick. A lot of mistakes behind the wheel happen before the driver ever hits the road.
For example, employers might pressure drivers to meet unreasonable deadlines. They might overwork drivers, leading to fatigue. Some companies routinely neglect maintenance, leading to worn brakes or tires. They might put inexperienced drivers or drivers with a proven history of negligent behavior behind the wheel because they care more about getting product moving than the safety of the general public.
Here's why that matters. If all of this happened due to a single reckless truck driver, they obviously should face appropriate consequences. But if there's a deeper issue at work here that could continue putting lives at risk, that needs to be rooted out as soon as possible. Not only do the victim's loved ones deserve to see accountability for what happened, they also deserve to know other families won't suffer the way they have.
