That may be all there is to this story, but I always try to caution folks against making that assumption based on early news reports. They often leave out important details that further investigations will later uncover.
For example, a colleague of mine told me about a recent case that involved a woman whose vehicle rear-ended a semi-truck at a stop light. She was seriously injured in that crash, and authorities blamed her for the accident. But when analyzed by a reconstructionist, the speed of the impact shouldn’t have been serious enough to injure the woman that severely. So what happened? Well, it turned out she had a defective airbag. She likely would have been fine had it not been for that malfunction.
Again, I’m not trying to suggest anything about this specific wreck. It’s just that people see news reports of someone rear-ending a vehicle, and they are content to just blame the victim and move on. But without knowing all the facts, doing so is just plain irresponsible. It’s best to just let the evidence speak for itself. That’s especially important when the victim isn’t here to tell her side of the story.
