When it comes to serious car accidents, things are rarely as straight-forward as people may think. Authorities do not always dedicate the time or effort to getting clear answers, and they may be more focused on getting to a conclusion than actually taking the time to consider the evidence and let the facts speak for themselves. Sometimes, a few simple questions can reveal that authorities’ efforts alone simply aren’t going to be good enough.

For example, have authorities looked into any defects? This can include issues with steering or braking mechanisms, for instance, that cause a vehicle to suddenly lose control. Or, there may be issues with seatbelts or airbags that make victims suffer more serious injuries than they otherwise would have.

Also, how much electronic evidence has been preserved? Most modern vehicles have Engine Control Modules (ECMs) which can show things like steering, braking, or speeds leading up the crash. Also, nearby businesses or residences may have caught the accident on video, and that video needs to be pulled before it’s overwritten. Even cellphone records, which is one of the first things we look into whenever we get a car accident case, can be overlooked if authorities are too busy worrying about other responsibilities.

All said and done, authorities may be able to provide clear, sensible answers that show their investigations were thorough. Other times, though, their answers can come up short, which is usually the sign the accident would be better off in the hands of independent investigators. It remains to be seen how this particular accident has been handled.
