Whenever someone is seriously injured in an accident, there’s a concern about whether or not authorities ever got their side of the story. It can surprise folks how often authorities treat single-vehicle wrecks as a low priority, leading to shallow or haphazard investigations. It can be crucial, then, to consider some key questions when listening to what authorities have to say about a given crash.
One of the first things to consider is whether authorities had the right tools and enough time to properly investigate the scene. When departments are stretched thin, single-vehicle crashes like this can be overlooked, and key details—like road conditions, tire marks, or vehicle positioning—may never be documented.
It’s also important to ask whether a vehicle defect could have contributed to the crash. Problems like brake failure, steering issues, or even faulty tires can cause a driver to lose control. Or, faulty safety devices like seatbelts or airbags may result in serious injuries that otherwise could have been prevented.
Lastly, has all crash-related electronic data been secured? Most modern vehicles store information like speed, braking, and steering input leading up to a crash. Cell phone records and also any nearby security cameras should also be examined when possible.
If authorities can show that they have clear answers to these questions, that’s likely a sign that their investigations were thorough. If their answers still leave doubts and concerns, then it may be that more thorough secondary investigations would show authorities missed something important.
