Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
I always maintain some reasonable skepticism following any serious motorcycle accident. Frankly, they aren’t always taken as seriously as they should be. A lot of people are biased against motorcycle riders, and this can negatively impact investigations. Authorities who might give a driver the benefit of the doubt and investigate potentially unavoidable factors may instead jump to conclusions based on their preconceived image of how motorcyclists behave.
To be clear, I’m not suggesting these particular investigations were mishandled in any way. Authorities are certainly capable of putting aside bias and letting the facts speak for themselves. However, it can sometimes be helpful for families to have independent investigators look things over to see if authorities missed anything. Either their efforts can confirm authorities told everything there is to know, or they may find previously unknown details the family deserves to hear. Either way, people deserve to know they’re getting the whole story.
