Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When I see a report about a crash involving an emergency vehicle, my first thought is that I hope the families of those involved get the answers they deserve. Fire trucks, by their nature, operate under unique circumstances—responding quickly to emergencies often means navigating traffic in unpredictable ways. However, that doesn’t mean that every crash involving an emergency vehicle is unavoidable. To truly understand what happened, three critical questions must be addressed.
First, did authorities conduct a thorough investigation? Crashes involving emergency vehicles can be complex because these vehicles are allowed to bypass certain traffic rules while responding to calls. However, that doesn’t mean all emergency vehicle crashes are simply "accidents." Did investigators properly analyze the scene, document traffic signal data, and interview witnesses? Was the fire engine’s speed and maneuvering evaluated to determine whether proper safety measures were followed? Without a detailed review, crucial evidence could be overlooked.
Second, has anyone considered whether a mechanical failure or vehicle defect contributed to the crash? Fire engines are heavy, specialized vehicles that require precise handling and properly maintained braking and steering systems. If the fire truck’s brakes, tires, or steering components failed at the wrong moment, the driver may have been unable to avoid the collision. Similarly, if the sedan had a mechanical issue that prevented its driver from reacting in time, that could also be a factor. Unfortunately, defect-related crashes often go undiagnosed unless someone ensures that both vehicles are preserved and examined by experts.
Third, has all available electronic data related to the crash been collected? Many modern fire trucks are equipped with onboard tracking systems that record speed, braking, and emergency light usage. Additionally, traffic cameras, nearby surveillance footage, and even the fire department’s dispatch logs could provide valuable insight into how the crash occurred. If investigators don’t act quickly to secure this information, it may be lost, making it much harder to determine the true cause of the collision.
At the end of the day, crashes like this don’t just impact the individuals involved—they leave families and entire communities searching for answers. Determining exactly what led to this collision is essential, not just for closure, but also to ensure that emergency response protocols and vehicle safety measures are as effective as possible. A thorough investigation is the only way to make sure that no question is left unanswered.
