Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Early on after a serious car accident, it’s not unusual for there to be so few details. It can take a lot of experience, equipment, and time to properly secure all necessary evidence. While people may assume authorities have all that handled, asking key questions early on may show otherwise.

  • Were investigators equipped to handle a crash of this scale?
Crashes with multiple injuries and ejections demand more than a quick scene review. If officers lacked time or tools to document impact points, seatbelt usage, or vehicle positions, important pieces of the puzzle could already be missing.
  • Has anyone considered whether a vehicle defect played a role?
Failures in safety systems—like seatbelts, airbags, or even structural components—can result in people being ejected or more severely injured. These issues aren’t always visible at a glance and require detailed inspections to uncover.
  • Was critical electronic data collected?
Many vehicles store pre-crash data showing speed, braking, and steering activity. That data, along with any phone usage or camera footage nearby, could help clarify what led to the crash—but only if it’s secured early.

These questions can help reveal any potential shortcomings, which then allows victims and families to seek out experienced investigators who can pick up the slack. Doing so here could prove prudent while it’s still early in the investigations.
