Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle ends up airborne and collides with a tree, it points to an event that escalated quickly and violently. While it's easy to focus on the visible damage, the real story often lies in the moments leading up to that final impact—and whether those moments have been fully understood.
Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
A crash involving a vehicle leaving the road, going airborne, and hitting a fixed object should prompt a detailed analysis. Investigators need to determine how fast the vehicle was going, how it left the road, and what happened immediately before that loss of control. Tools like trajectory mapping, scene measurements, and a review of any pre-impact behavior should be standard in situations like this. Unfortunately, whether that happens often comes down to how much time and expertise is applied to the scene.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
A sudden and severe crash without a clear trigger always raises the possibility that the vehicle itself didn’t behave the way it should have. Mechanical issues—especially involving steering, brakes, or electronic controls—can cause a driver to lose control without warning. The only way to explore that possibility is through a detailed mechanical inspection. If that step was skipped, a potential contributing factor may remain completely hidden.
Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
The Chevy Silverado likely contains data systems that can show exactly what happened before the crash—speed, braking, steering input, and safety system performance. That data can either confirm what was observed at the scene or reveal a completely different narrative. Without that kind of digital evidence, any conclusions drawn about the crash remain tentative at best.
When a crash leaves a vehicle airborne, it’s clear that something went seriously wrong. What’s not always clear is whether investigators have gone far enough to understand why it happened.
Key Takeaways:
- Crashes involving airborne vehicles require advanced scene analysis and trajectory review.
- Mechanical issues can’t be ruled out without a full inspection of the vehicle.
- Vehicle data systems may hold the only complete record of what led up to the crash.
