When I read about a crash like this, my first thought is that the people affected deserve clear answers about what happened. That may sound straightforward, but in my experience, crash investigations often leave out key details that could explain why a crash occurred. To get to the truth, three critical questions always need to be asked.
The first is whether the authorities conducted a thorough investigation. Given the unusual nature of this case — a “homemade vehicle” crashing in a residential area — it's important to consider how well-equipped investigators are to analyze such a situation. Most crash investigations focus on standard passenger vehicles, and law enforcement agencies vary widely in terms of training and resources for more complex cases. Did investigators examine the vehicle's construction? Were there mechanical failures that contributed to the crash? Were witnesses interviewed to understand the circumstances leading up to the incident? These are all essential parts of a competent investigation.
The second question is whether a vehicle defect played a role in the crash. With homemade vehicles, the risk of mechanical failure or design flaws is significantly higher than with factory-manufactured cars. If authorities assume the crash was solely due to speed, they may overlook whether a structural weakness, steering failure or brake malfunction was involved. The only way to answer that question is with a thorough forensic examination of the vehicle itself. However, if the vehicle is scrapped or altered before experts have the chance to investigate, that evidence could be lost forever.
The final question is whether all electronic data related to the crash has been collected. In many accidents, electronic records from a vehicle’s black box, dash cams or nearby surveillance footage provide crucial insight into what happened. A homemade vehicle likely lacks many of these standard data sources, making it even more important to secure other forms of evidence. Additionally, cell phone records from the driver could reveal whether distractions played a role, and nearby security cameras could offer a clearer picture of how the crash unfolded.
Ultimately, determining why this crash happened isn’t just about assigning responsibility: it’s about ensuring that all the right questions have been asked and answered. Serious accidents can change lives in an instant, and the least the community owes those affected is a full and fair investigation that leaves no stone unturned.
