Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle rolls over without contact from another car, the real question becomes what set that chain of events in motion. Those answers often aren’t visible at first glance, which is why careful investigation matters.
Did investigators take a complete, detailed look at the scene?
For a rollover crash, the starting point is understanding how and why the SUV left its stable path. Mapping tire marks, measuring distances, and documenting the vehicle’s movements before it tipped are all part of a proper reconstruction. These steps can reveal whether the driver made sudden steering inputs, encountered an obstacle, or reacted to something unseen. Without them, the cause can be left to guesswork.
Was a vehicle defect considered as a possible factor?
Mechanical issues—such as a blown tire, brake failure, or steering malfunction—can cause sudden loss of control, especially at highway speeds. The SUV’s suspension and stability control systems also play a big role in whether it stays upright during evasive maneuvers. Only a thorough inspection can confirm or rule out a defect.
Has all electronic and recorded data been secured?
Modern SUVs often store a detailed record of speed, braking, and steering angles in the seconds before a crash. If paired with GPS logs or dash cam footage, this data can show exactly how the loss of control began. Because this information can disappear quickly, collecting it early is key.
Asking these questions ensures that the story behind the crash is built on evidence, not assumptions. That’s how investigators move from speculation to certainty.
Key takeaways:
- Single-vehicle rollovers need careful scene reconstruction to find the root cause.
- Mechanical inspections can reveal problems that aren’t visible in the wreckage.
- Vehicle and camera data can capture the exact sequence leading up to the crash.
