Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When someone loses their life in a single-vehicle crash, it’s important to ask whether everything that could have caused the wreck was actually considered.
1. Did investigators take the time—and have the tools—to fully understand what happened?
A basic scene report might not show whether the vehicle swerved, braked, or reacted late. Without proper crash reconstruction, those details are often left out.
2. Was the vehicle checked for mechanical issues?
Losing control on a straight stretch of road can point to problems with tires, steering, or brakes. Unless the vehicle was inspected carefully, a malfunction could go unnoticed.
3. Was any electronic data saved from the vehicle?
Data systems can show speed, braking, steering input, and more—key to understanding what the driver and vehicle did in the moments before the crash. But it only helps if someone preserved it.
Likely or not, all possibilities deserve consideration. If authorities get hung up on what seems obvious, they might overlook something important.
Takeaways:
Vehicle data might explain what happened—if it was collected in time.
It’s unknown whether the crash was fully analyzed using proper tools.
A mechanical issue could have contributed and needs inspection to confirm.
