Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a serious accident like the one recently reported at the intersection of Lewis Front Street and Bluff Street happens, it’s important to approach the situation with careful and thorough investigation. Having spent over 30 years handling complex accident cases, I can say with certainty that reaching the truth always begins by asking the right questions—not jumping to conclusions based on incomplete facts.
One key question is whether authorities conducted a thorough investigation. When a crash involves allegations that a vehicle was traveling without lights, it becomes especially important to gather witness statements, document roadway lighting conditions, and inspect both vehicles carefully. Without that groundwork, it’s all too easy for critical details to slip through the cracks.
Another question that should be asked is whether a defect in either vehicle could have contributed to the accident. If the eastbound vehicle's lights were indeed not working, was that due to driver error or a mechanical failure? Vehicle inspections, maintenance records, and recall notices are all vital pieces of the puzzle that investigators should be gathering and reviewing.
Finally, it’s important to determine whether electronic data from the involved vehicles has been preserved and analyzed. Modern cars often have systems that record valuable information like speed, braking, and steering inputs in the moments leading up to a crash. That data can provide important insights that witness recollections alone cannot fully capture.
Answering these three questions is critical to making sure that no stone is left unturned in understanding the causes of a crash like this. Serious wrecks deserve serious investigation, not assumptions. Getting clear answers to these questions is crucial for those seeking to understand what happened and why—and it's the least that can be done to help those affected find the clarity and closure they deserve.
