Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle flips onto its roof without any other cars involved, the focus has to move beyond surface-level conclusions. A crash like this doesn’t happen for no reason—and the real cause often lies in the details that aren’t immediately visible.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
A rollover crash on a highway requires a full reconstruction to understand the sequence of events. Investigators should examine the vehicle’s entry and exit path, assess for signs of steering correction or braking, and determine where and how the vehicle began to overturn. If a passenger needed to be extricated, it also raises concerns about the severity of impact and whether vehicle safety systems performed as expected. These are the details that make the difference in understanding what really happened.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
When a vehicle flips with no external collision involved, mechanical failure should be considered. A steering issue, tire failure, or malfunction in the suspension or stability control system can cause a vehicle to lose balance or react unpredictably at speed. If the vehicle hasn’t been thoroughly examined, especially for undercarriage or suspension problems, then the investigation is still incomplete.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Most modern vehicles store crash-related data like speed, throttle use, steering angle, and braking patterns. That information can help determine whether the driver was attempting to regain control—and whether the vehicle was responding appropriately. GPS and mobile phone activity might also offer a broader view of what was happening just before the crash. Without preserving this data quickly, those insights may already be lost.
When a vehicle ends up on its roof and multiple occupants are injured, the most important answers often aren’t at the scene—they’re in the vehicle’s systems and the moments that led to the first mistake.
Takeaways:
- Rollover crashes with no other vehicles involved require full scene analysis and vehicle movement review.
- Mechanical failures in tires, suspension, or stability systems should be investigated.
- Crash data can confirm whether the vehicle responded properly in the seconds before it flipped.
