When I see reports like this, my first thought is that I hope investigators are able to determine exactly what led to the crash. When a vehicle loses control and overturns, people often assume the driver simply made an error, but my experience has shown that these incidents are often more complex than they initially appear. To truly understand what happened, there are three critical questions that must be answered.

The first question is whether authorities conducted a thorough investigation. Law enforcement officers will typically document the crash scene, analyze road conditions, and attempt to determine what caused the vehicle to lose control. However, the depth of these investigations can vary depending on available resources and training. Given that the truck struck a utility pole before flipping, it’s important to examine whether environmental factors—such as icy roads, debris, or poor lighting—may have contributed. Additionally, investigators should consider whether another vehicle’s actions played a role, even if no other cars were involved in the crash itself.

The second question is whether anyone has considered the possibility of a vehicle defect. Mechanical failures can cause a vehicle to become uncontrollable, particularly if there is a problem with the brakes, steering, or tires. Additionally, given that the truck overturned, it’s worth investigating whether the roof structure held up as it should have and whether any safety systems—such as airbags or seatbelts—functioned properly. These types of determinations require a forensic examination of the vehicle before it is repaired or scrapped, yet they are often overlooked in the rush to clear a crash scene.

The final question is whether all electronic data related to the crash has been collected. The vehicle’s electronic control module (ECM) may contain key information about what was happening in the moments before the crash, such as speed, braking, and steering inputs. Investigators should also check for any available surveillance footage, nearby traffic cameras, or dashcam recordings that could provide further insight. Additionally, reviewing cell phone records could help determine whether distraction was a possible factor. Unfortunately, this kind of evidence is often ignored unless someone specifically requests it.

Until these questions are fully answered, it’s too soon to assume what caused this crash. Ensuring a thorough investigation isn’t just about determining responsibility—it’s about providing answers to those affected, identifying any preventable factors, and making sure steps are taken to improve safety for all drivers on the road.
