Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
My concern following any crash involving a teen driver is that people can be quick to jump to conclusions. Since teen drivers are more likely to make mistakes, this can lead to investigators overlooking other possible explanations and moving on without actually letting the evidence speak for itself.
Did a vehicle defect cause the crash? Was lighting or visibility an issue? Did any nearby cameras catch the accident on video? Was the victim too seriously injured to give a statement to officers? Are there witnesses authorities have yet to follow up with? These are examples of questions I'd expect thorough investigations to address, yet I've seen authorities completely overlook them plenty of times.
This is why it's often helpful for families to actually follow up with authorities rather than wait around for answers. If authorities can't alleviate their doubts and show they did good investigations, then it's only reasonable a family would want a second set of eyes looking things over to ensure nothing important slipped through the cracks. I see no reason right now why this crash would be an exception.
