Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When I read about a crash like the one in Lytle that claimed the life of Cheyanne Crumley, many might assume it was simply the result of driver error. However, without a thorough investigation, it’s impossible to know for certain what led to the crash. That’s why it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure all potential factors are examined.

First, did the authorities conduct a thorough investigation? Single-vehicle crashes are often treated as straightforward, but that can lead to critical details being overlooked. Did investigators examine the roadway for hazards such as debris, potholes, or signage issues? Were there any witnesses or nearby surveillance cameras that could provide insight into what happened before the vehicle swerved? A complete investigation should go beyond assumptions and seek to establish the full story.

Second, has anyone looked into whether a vehicle defect played a role? Mechanical failures such as steering malfunctions, brake issues, or tire blowouts can sometimes cause drivers to lose control. Even if no immediate issues were noted at the scene, a professional inspection of the vehicle could reveal underlying defects that might not have been obvious.

Lastly, have investigators gathered all available electronic data? Many modern vehicles contain event data recorders that store crucial information about speed, braking, and steering inputs in the moments before a crash. Retrieving and analyzing this data could help determine whether the driver attempted to avoid something in the roadway or if an unexpected mechanical failure occurred. Nearby traffic cameras or surveillance footage could also provide valuable insight.

At the end of the day, answering these questions could be essential to understanding what really happened and why. A thorough examination of all three of these issues—including the quality of police investigations, possible vehicle defects, and electronic data—is the least that can be done to ensure that those affected by the crash receive the clarity they deserve.
