A lot of folks I talk to assume that single-vehicle wrecks are simple just because there’s only one vehicle involved. In reality, they can be uniquely challenging since authorities don’t always see them as a high priority. That’s why a lot of victims and families that call me about them have similar concerns about whether authorities are actually interested in getting all sides of the story. Sometimes, they aren’t.
A serious crash like this needs to be looked at from all angles. Were there mechanical issues? Was there an issue with signage or lighting here? Was there some kind of emergency going on? Did a tire fail? Have authorities looked into electronic data from the vehicle, the victim’s cell phone, and any cameras that may be in the vicinity?
Sometimes, asking these questions shows that authorities don’t really have any good responses. That can be a sign they never took the investigations seriously. That’s when there may need to be more thorough independent investigations to ensure the whole story is considered. This can help ensure those affected by the crash are confident their side of the story is being told fairly.
