Commentary
As open-and-shut as this all may seem, it's important to remember that there's knowing what caused an accident and being able to prove it. I can't begin to count how many people I've spoken to who saw police put a negligent driver at fault, assume that the rest of the process was automatic, and find themselves weeks or months down the line without seeing any kind of actual accountability.
Too often, it takes steps from independent investigators to gather and preserve evidence that families can use to show definitively who and what was responsible for an accident. Instead of waiting around for authorities—who might decide they have more important things to work on—families can seek out avenues that put their needs first. Maybe authorities have been taking this accident seriously, but there's just not enough information available right now to make me confident about that.
