Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

It doesn’t take an experienced attorney to point out that this crash likely resulted in an incredibly chaotic, complex crash scene. What folks may not realize, though, is that authorities aren’t always up to the task of handling such a delicate situation on their own. Things aren’t as simple as just finding out if something like speeding or texting caused the initial collision that sent the concrete truck flying off the overpass. Details which may not be immediately apparent at the accident site also need attention.

Have authorities pulled cell phone records? Did they examine nearby cameras for video of the crash? Did they check the maintenance records of the vehicles involved to see if poor maintenance led to the crash? Did the accident happen due to a driver that was working long hours? Was there a driver involved who had a history of reckless driving? Are the trucks being preserved to look for possible vehicle defects? Are the companies involved cooperating, or are they too focused shifting blame and stonewalling authorities?

Simply put, I’ve handled hundreds of commercial vehicle accident cases. Rarely do I see authorities have access to the tools, time, and training needed for some of these more complex, delicate pieces of evidence. As such, details often slip through the cracks unless there are independent investigators with the right equipment and experienced there to fill in the gaps. At the end of the day, there are people affected by this crash who deserve answers. They shouldn’t have to worry that authorities are going to move on to other responsibilities before they’ve given the victims and families the full story.
