Officers put their lives on the line every time they stop to help someone on the side of the road. That's why a crash like this raises common concerns about possible target fixation and what condition the truck driver was in to crash into an emergency vehicle instead of slowing down and going around the scene.
One crucial step investigators can take is to quickly secure electronic data. Most obvious to secure is the driver's cellphone records. It's the first thing I work to secure in any serious accident investigation, as it can reveal if a driver was distracted at the time of the crash. Investigators also need to check the driver's hours of service logs to find out how long they'd been behind the wheel. The truck's Engine Control Module (ECM) can show things like speed, braking, and even steering leading up to the collision. The truck might also have a dash cam or even a camera inside the cabin which could show exactly what the truck driver was doing in the moments before impact.
Electronic data is often time-sensitive. The longer it's in the hands of anyone but a trained forensic investigator, the more likely it is the evidence is deleted, overwritten, or otherwise corrupted. As such, time is of the essence. I know from working with hundreds of families affected by commercial vehicle accidents how challenging it can be to think about things like court orders and detailed inspections after someone loses their life. Taking those steps, though, is absolutely vital for getting a grieving family the answers and the resolution they deserve.
