Cypress Teen, car Accident on I-10 in Harris County, TX

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When several people are hurt in a freeway crash, early reports often stop short of explaining how it happened. Saying the vehicles “crossed paths” doesn’t answer the bigger question of why they collided in the first place.

Did investigators fully reconstruct the scene?
Freeway accidents involving multiple injuries can be complicated, but not every department has the training or resources to piece them together. A proper reconstruction would involve mapping the lanes, reviewing skid marks, and analyzing damage patterns to confirm speeds and movements before impact. Without that, the record may only tell part of the story.

Could mechanical issues have been involved?
Brake failures, steering problems, or even sudden tire blowouts could push one vehicle into another’s path. On top of that, if airbags or seatbelts don’t function correctly, the difference between a minor crash and serious injuries can be drastic. Inspections of both the Prius and Denali are crucial before evidence is lost.

Has electronic evidence been preserved?
Both vehicles likely carry Engine Control Modules (ECMs) that can reveal speed, braking, and steering inputs in the seconds before the collision. In a major interchange like I-10 and Grand Parkway, traffic cameras may also hold valuable footage. Cellphone records could provide further context. This information is time-sensitive and must be secured quickly.

Families deserve more than a vague description of vehicles “crossing paths.” Real clarity comes from careful evidence gathering that explains not only what happened but also why it did.

Takeaways:

  • Multi-vehicle freeway crashes require detailed reconstruction.
  • Vehicle or safety system defects can affect both cause and injury severity.
  • ECM data, cameras, and cellphone records are vital for the full story.
