Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
While folks may not think that would be too challenging, they may forget that drivers can't always avoid single-vehicle crashes.
When an experienced accident reconstructionist looks into single-vehicle wrecks, they're going to give attention to things like mechanical issues, poor roadway design, defective tires, faulty brakes, hit-and-runs, and other such factors which may not be too common. That requires a lot of experience and even specialized tools.
Is it more likely for a driver's mistake to cause a crash like this? Of course, but jumping to conclusions inevitably leads to victims being blamed for something they had no control over. That's why single-vehicle wrecks need to be taken seriously so that nothing important slips through the cracks. Even if nothing unusual happened, investigators can confidently rule out other possibilities. Hopefully the lack of information in these current statements isn't a sign authorities are dropping the ball.
