One of the most important things a family can learn after losing a loved one in a crash is how thorough the investigations were.

For example, authorities here say that it was raining at the time. I’ve seen countless examples of authorities seeing bad weather contribute to a crash, and they just immediately assume the victim was driving too fast. That’s obviously a possibility worth considering, but did they go on to do proper investigations?

Did they pull vehicle data? Did they inspect the vehicle for defects? Did they check for nearby cameras that may have captured the incident on video? Were there any witnesses to follow up with? If authorities never dig into these details, they can easily miss important information.

It’s possible authorities were able to show that their investigations were thorough and prioritized letting the evidence speak for itself. But if a family ever feels like details aren’t adding up or their questions aren’t being answered, it’s important to trust that instinct—if only out of an abundance of caution.
