Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

If the allegations are true, then people no doubt want to see accountability—rightfully so. But what exactly does that entail? Folks typically see an alleged drunk driver facing charges and think that’s all there is to it. However, there could be an accomplice authorities have yet to investigate: a negligent alcohol provider. Here’s why that’s so important after a deadly drunk driving accident.

Simply put, alcohol providers in Texas who over-serve obviously intoxicated persons can face criminal investigations, fines, suspended licenses, and liability if it leads to people getting hurt or killed. Not only does that provide potential avenues to see them face consequences for their actions, but it also creates a path for those establishments to clean up their act before more people get hurt.

That’s why it can be frustrating how often victims and families call me about a drunk driving accident, and authorities haven’t even begun looking into where the alcohol came from. At the end of the day, people don’t want some bad guy to blame. They want to know that all who wronged them are going to answer for their actions. Perhaps that’s just a single reckless drunk driver, or maybe there’s a local establishment who broke the law and set the stage for this deadly crash. It’s important there are at least thorough enough investigations to say for sure so those involved here know there will be a just resolution.
