Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a driver crosses into oncoming traffic and causes a deadly head-on crash, it’s natural to assume the cause was simple error. But that assumption can overlook deeper issues—ones that only come to light through a complete and careful investigation. A crash like this, with one life lost and others seriously injured, deserves that level of scrutiny.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
Determining how and why the Honda Accord veered into oncoming traffic isn’t something that can be left to guesswork. Did investigators document the point of lane departure, evaluate whether the driver attempted to steer back, or collect physical evidence to reconstruct the vehicle’s path? Did they consider the speed and direction of both vehicles? Especially in rural areas, where response teams may be stretched thin, it’s worth asking whether the scene was given the time and resources needed for a full reconstruction.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
Sudden lane departures aren’t always caused by distraction or fatigue. Steering malfunctions, tire failures, or electronic stability system errors can all force a vehicle off course—sometimes with no warning. If the Honda Accord wasn’t inspected thoroughly, those possibilities could go completely unaddressed. Given the severity of this crash, it’s critical that someone confirm the vehicle was functioning properly before the final moments.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Both the Accord and the Ford Expedition likely contain event data recorders that can help piece together the moments before impact—speed, steering input, braking, and possible system warnings. That data can either support or challenge assumptions about what happened. GPS movement, infotainment logs, and even phone data could provide additional context. But this information doesn’t last forever—it must be retrieved quickly to be useful.
Crashes that involve multiple victims and a fatality deserve answers grounded in evidence—not assumptions. Without a full investigation, the real cause may remain hidden, and that helps no one.
Key Takeaways:
- Head-on collisions require thorough scene analysis to determine why one vehicle crossed the center line.
- Mechanical issues in the striking vehicle must be ruled out through inspection.
- Electronic data from both vehicles can clarify the sequence of events—if preserved in time.
