Amarillo, TX — January 12, 2025, Dylan Bird was killed and two others were injured in a car accident sometime during the night along Hillside Road.
According to authorities, 37-year-old Dylan Thomas Bird and a child were traveling in a Subaru in the left-of-two eastbound lanes of Hillside Road in the vicinity of Shawnee Trail when the accident took place.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Subaru apparently attempted a lane change to the right lane at an unsafe time. This resulted in a collision between the Subaru and a Ford Focus that had been traveling in the right lane. The impact reportedly caused both the Subaru and the Ford to lose control, colliding with a house and a wooden pole before coming to a stop.
Bird suffered fatal injuries over the course of the accident, according to reports, and was declared deceased at the scene. The child who had been with him in the Subaru and the person who had been behind the wheel of the Ford sustained injuries of unknown severity and were transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When accidents result in a fatality and injuries, it is critical to conduct a thorough investigation to determine how and why the crash occurred. In my experience, understanding the factors behind a collision like this requires careful consideration of three critical questions.
First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? Collisions involving lane changes and loss of control often present complex scenarios that require meticulous analysis. Investigators should assess physical evidence such as tire marks, debris, and the vehicles’ final positions to reconstruct the sequence of events. Witness statements and any available surveillance or dashcam footage could help clarify whether the Subaru’s lane change was improperly timed or if other factors, such as speed or distractions, played a role.
Second, has anyone considered whether a vehicle defect might have contributed to the crash? Mechanical failures, such as brake or steering malfunctions, could explain why either vehicle lost control after the collision. A forensic examination of both the Subaru and the Ford Focus is necessary to rule out or confirm such issues. Additionally, given the severity of the crash, the effectiveness of the vehicles’ safety systems—such as seat belts and airbags—should be evaluated to determine whether they functioned as intended to mitigate injuries.
Finally, has all relevant electronic data been collected? Modern vehicles like the Subaru and the Ford Focus are typically equipped with event data recorders (EDRs) that can provide key information about speed, braking, and steering inputs leading up to the crash. This data can help determine whether the Subaru’s movements were consistent with driver input or indicative of a mechanical problem. Nearby surveillance footage or dashcams might also provide a clearer picture of the moments leading up to the collision, offering insights into external factors that may have contributed. Promptly securing this evidence is essential to ensure no critical details are lost.
Accidents involving lane changes and multiple impacts are rarely straightforward and require detailed investigation to identify all possible contributing factors. By addressing these questions, investigators can work toward a clearer understanding of what happened and why. For the loved ones of Dylan Bird and for those recovering from injuries, obtaining these answers is a necessary step toward understanding and closure. A comprehensive investigation is the least that can be done to ensure every possible factor is carefully examined.
