Crashes involving commercial trucks can involve unique challenges, and it's important to know if authorities are willing or able to meet those challenges. For one, it's important to go beyond the surface and consider evidence that isn't always immediately obvious. Cell phone records, data from the vehicle Engine Control Module (ECM), cameras on the truck or from nearby businesses or residences, potential vehicle defects, etc.
Beyond that, though, there's the added layer of commercial vehicles usually involving an employer. Did their actions contribute to the crash? Were they forcing a driver to work long hours or meet unreasonable deadlines? Were they not maintaining the truck? Did they put an inexperienced driver behind the wheel? Was the driver on a poorly planned route?
If authorities are being broad enough to answers all of these potential questions, then it's likely they'll get the full story. But if they instead jump to conclusions or conduct investigations that only scratch the surface, there may be crucial details that slip through the cracks and leave the victim without an opportunity to get a resolution they deserve.
