Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a crash involves a box truck and multiple other vehicles, the key question isn’t just what happened but why it happened. My experience handling truck accident cases tells me that multi-vehicle crashes often involve a combination of driver decisions, traffic conditions and road design, all of which should be examined closely.

One of the first things investigators should determine is how the crash started. Did the box truck cause the collision, or was it reacting to an event ahead? In heavy traffic, even a momentary lapse in attention or sudden braking can lead to a chain reaction. Investigators should review dashcam footage, witness statements and vehicle data to determine the sequence of events.

Another key issue is whether speed and following distance played a role. Box trucks are smaller than semi-trucks, but they still take longer to stop than passenger vehicles. If traffic slowed suddenly, was the truck driver maintaining enough space to stop safely? If not, was that due to driver inattention, poor visibility or external factors like road congestion?

Beyond driver behavior, road design should also be considered. State Route 17 is known for heavy traffic, frequent stop-and-go movement and challenging merges. Was this crash influenced by sudden lane changes, poorly timed traffic signals or other roadway issues? If this area has seen similar crashes before, that may indicate a larger pattern that warrants further attention.

While authorities continue their investigation, a proper review should go beyond the crash itself and look at traffic flow, road conditions and driver actions to determine what led to this collision and whether anything could have been done to prevent it.
