My immediate instinct here is to ask if any of the nearby homes have security cameras with a view of the road. These days, a lot of people have doorbell cameras and other security systems which can provide valuable evidence for solving a mystery like this. At the very least, someone in the vicinity could be sitting on crucial evidence that could help a family get much needed closure. Is that something authorities considered in their investigations?
