Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Single-vehicle wrecks are a type of crash I get calls about all the time. Generally speaking, people have the same concerns: they want to be sure their side of the story is told fairly. One thing that can help to ensure that happens is following up with the authorities as soon as possible and asking a few key questions:
The first question to ask is whether investigators had the proper tools and enough time to fully document the crash scene. In single-vehicle accidents, critical details—like skid marks, debris, and the exact position of the vehicle—can explain a lot about what happened. If those aren’t collected right away, that context can be lost.
Next, has anyone checked the vehicle for possible defects? Failures in brakes, steering systems, or tires can cause a loss of control, and if seatbelts or airbags didn’t work as they should, that could explain the severity of the injuries. These problems often go unnoticed unless someone takes steps to inspect the vehicle before it’s repaired or discarded.
Finally, was any crash-related electronic data preserved? Most vehicles today store speed, braking, and steering input in the seconds before a crash. That information, along with possible GPS records or nearby surveillance footage, can help clarify what took place—if it’s collected quickly.
Typically, if authorities have clear answers to these sorts of concerns, then that’s a good sign that they conducted thorough and fair investigations. But if their answers come up short, victims and families may feel more comfortable having a second set of eyes look things over to see if authorities missed something important.
