Maryland Man Killed, New Jersey Man Injured in Truck Accident on Route 1 in Smyrna, DE
Smyrna, DE — April 26, 2023, one person was killed and two others were injured following a semi-truck accident at around 11:43 a.m. on Route 1.
Authorities with the Delaware State Police say they responded to the area of the northbound lanes of Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway at Exit 114 for U.S. 13 and Routes 6 and 300.

According to their initial statements, the incident happened as a flatbed semi-truck was stopped on the shoulder along northbound lanes of the highway. That truck driver was outside of the flatbed at the time. While there, a passing box truck apparently left its lane after the box truck driver fell asleep, according to recent reports. The box truck crashed into the flatbed, hitting the driver outside of the flatbed as it did so.
Due to the collision, a 57-year-old Baltimore, Maryland man riding as a passenger in the box truck succumbed to fatal injuries. The driver of the flatbed, identified as a 60-year-old Somerset, New Jersey man, had apparently critical injuries. The 24-year-old Ranson, West Virginia man said to be driving the box truck had injuries described as minor.
Right now, additional details surrounding the crash are unavailable. It's unclear if authorities plan to file charges or citations.
