Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When an incident like this occurs, people often focus on the immediate and dramatic nature of the explosion itself. However, in my experience as an attorney with over 30 years of handling commercial vehicle accident cases, incidents like this require a closer look at how the circumstances leading to such a catastrophic failure came about.
Compressed natural gas (CNG) is a widely used alternative fuel in commercial fleets, including garbage trucks. Its appeal lies in being a cleaner-burning and cost-effective option compared to diesel fuel. However, the systems storing and delivering CNG must adhere to stringent maintenance and inspection protocols, as even a small defect or oversight can lead to disastrous outcomes. Was this explosion the result of a manufacturing defect in the tank or valves? Could poor maintenance or improper installation of the system have played a role? These questions will be central to determining what caused the failure and who might be responsible.
The role of the waste management company must also be carefully examined. Companies operating vehicles powered by CNG are responsible for ensuring that safety measures are rigorously followed. Were the required inspections and certifications up to date? Were employees properly trained to spot potential issues with the fuel system? Investigating whether the company took adequate steps to ensure the truck’s safety is critical to understanding what went wrong.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the incident. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
