Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

With this sort of crash, there are concerns that authorities might not have much information to work with. While folks tend to think they’re always incredibly thorough, a lot of crash investigations from authorities are little more than witness testimony and statements from the people involved. Well, when there’s no one to talk to, authorities often jump to conclusions. They overlook possibilities like a tire blowout, animals in the road, mechanical defects, and medical emergencies and just assume the driver did something wrong.

I’ve helped enough families set the record straight to know that authorities aren’t reliable when it comes to getting the whole story. It’s why a lot of prudent departments who understand their limitations enlist the aid of independent accident reconstructionists. Their experience and equipment help catch even unusual and complex possible factors a typical investigation might miss. If a department doesn’t take these precautions, though, families can easily find themselves just as in the dark as the rest of us in the public.
