Hidalgo County, TX — January 8, 2023, George Anselmo Jr. was killed as the result of a hit-and-run accident at around 8:00 p.m. on Alamo Road.
According to investigations, the crash happened at the intersection of Alamo Road and Wyoming Street, just East of Edinburg.

Initial details about the accident say that 21-year-old George Anselmo Jr. was in a Toyota Tacoma on northbound Alamo Road. Anselmo stopped and yielded to oncoming traffic while waiting to make a left turn. As he did so, however, authorities say a white Chevy Silverado failed to control speed, rear-ending Anselmo. This pushed Anselmo’s vehicle into oncoming lanes where it was hit head-on by a commercial van.
As a result of the accident, Anselmo sustained fatal injuries. Other injuries were not confirmed. Police allege that the driver of the Chevy fled before authorities arrived at the scene. That person was not identified in initial reports, however more recent news stories say the suspected runaway driver was identified and charged for their role in the accident.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Something that stood out to me were allegations that authorities found alcohol containers “cool to the touch” in the suspect’s vehicle after the driver left the pickup behind. If the driver had recently purchased and consumed alcohol prior to the accident, did authorities ever investigate where that alcohol came from? It’s possible they, too, contributed to this deadly crash.
Put simply, it’s illegal in Texas to over-serve someone who is obviously intoxicated. If they do so, it opens them up to potential consequences, such as criminal charges, civil liability, and fines and license suspensions. Not only can these consequences act as a punishment, but I also have seen first hand how alcohol providers who face appropriate consequences clean up their act before their behavior gets anyone else hurt. That’s why I can’t help wondering if authorities ever looked into all of this. Otherwise, there could still be more to this story.
