Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

To be clear up front, I don’t know anything more about this crash than what’s been told to the public. But single-vehicle wrecks tend to share common challenges. Chief among those challenges is people too quickly jump to conclusions—even authorities.

Just like any kind of accident, there can be unusual circumstances that are far more complex than some run-of-the-mill car crash. Were there mechanical defects? Was there an issue with the way the road is designed? Did a tire fail unexpectedly? Was someone illegally over-served by a local bar? Was there another vehicle involved that left the scene?

Generally, it’s not a problem when I ask these questions. But when folks see me ask them after a single-vehicle wreck, they become a lot less willing to keep an open mind. It’s true that this sort of thing is more commonly due to things like speeding or distraction, but is that an acceptable excuse to let something important slip through the cracks? I think any reasonable person would agree that it’s best to simply let the evidence speak for itself.
