Amarillo, TX — March 3, 2024, Heaven Welch was injured following a car accident at around 10:15 p.m. along the Interstate 40 access road.
Preliminary information released about the crash says that it happened off the corner of the I-40 and South Grand Street intersection.

Details suggest that 37-year-old Heaven Welch was in a Nissan Sentra going eastbound along the I-40 access road. While doing so, the Nissan apparently hit the back of a tractor-trailer also going eastbound. The car then reportedly continued some distance before going off-road and crashing into a tree and a fence. Welch was taken from the scene with reportedly serious injuries. No other injuries were reported.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
It stands out to me that the victim’s car kept going after the initial collision with the trailer until it eventually ran off-road and crashed again. That’s not very typical behavior. There could be a perfectly reasonable explanation, but it’s always important to consider unusual details like that because it could mean there were extenuating circumstances requiring further investigation.
I’ll give a perfect example. A co-worker and I were recently discussing a case where a driver was on their phone and rear-ended a semi-truck. Everything seemed open-and-shut, but it was unusual how seriously injured the driver was since the speed of the impact was pretty low. Well, investigators did their due diligence, looked into that unusual detail, and they found out the driver’s airbag was defective. Had it not been for that defect, they likely would have been fine.
What was initially written off as some run-of-the-mill case ended up being a major manufacturing defect that almost slipped through the cracks. Again, is that common? Not at all, but it happens, and it’s why experienced accident reconstructionists take every possible factor seriously. Once the evidence is allowed to speak for itself, then the victims and families can get the answers they deserve.
